Dick Hewitson

Dick first painted in the mid-1960s, when it was a seminal event for him to encounter Peter Lanyon’s ‘Offshore’ in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

He taught Biology for 37 years, and has lived in Dorset since 1970. His experience of studying the ecology of many Dorset habitats and of teaching biological fieldwork there may well have influenced his painting.

His work often arises from interpretation of landscape, ranging from contemporary figurative to abstract. He usually paints in oils.

He started painting seriously at the end of 2010.  He completed a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at West Dean College in early 2014, where his tutors included artists Frances Hatch and Christopher Baker.

Most of his painting is done in his studio.  When painting ‘landscapes’, initial research in the field usually and increasingly involves quite rapid sketches using various media, singly or together: pencil, ink, charcoal, graphite, watercolour washes.
